Results update automatically when you change the inputs.
Selected grade: Monel 400
Product form: Round Bar
Density used: 8.80 g/cm³
Important: This is an estimated theoretical weight, not a certified shipping or billing weight. Actual weight can differ because of dimensional tolerances, material variations, manufacturing conditions and product geometry.
How to Calculate Nickel Alloy Weight
Nickel alloy weight is calculated from the material's volume and density. Because different alloy grades have different compositions, their densities are not identical. Selecting the correct grade is therefore important when estimating the weight of bars, plates, pipes and wires.
Basic Weight Formula
Weight (kg) = Volume (cm³) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000First calculate the material volume using its dimensions. Multiply that volume by the selected alloy density to obtain the theoretical mass.
1. Round Bar and Wire
V = π × D² × L ÷ 4D is the diameter and L is the length. Convert both dimensions to centimeters before calculating volume in cubic centimeters.
2. Plate and Sheet
V = L × W × TL is the length, W is the width and T is the thickness. This formula assumes a rectangular plate with uniform thickness and no material removed.
3. Pipe and Tube
V = π × (OD² − ID²) × L ÷ 4OD is the outside diameter, ID is the inside diameter and L is the length. Calculate ID as OD minus twice the wall thickness.
4. Weight Conversion
1 kg = 2.20462262 lb 1 kg = 1,000 gUse these conversion factors to convert the calculated mass to kilograms, pounds or grams.
Calculation example: A solid Monel 400 round bar with a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 1,000 mm has an estimated weight of approximately 4.32 kg when the nominal density is set to 8.80 g/cm³.

Density figures are nominal reference values for preliminary calculations. Confirm the applicable manufacturer's technical datasheet and material certificate for the exact grade and product when higher calculation accuracy is required. A matching UNS number helps identify the grade, but does not replace verification of the applicable material specification.
Weight Calculation for Different Nickel Alloy Products
Nickel Alloy Round Bar Weight
Round bar weight depends on diameter, length and material density. It is commonly calculated when estimating stock requirements, cutting plans, order quantities and transportation weight. This calculator assumes a solid circular cross-section; square bars and hexagonal bars require different geometric formulas.
Nickel Alloy Plate and Sheet Weight
Plate weight depends on length, width, thickness and the selected alloy density. Even a small change in thickness can affect the total material weight of a large plate. For procurement planning, use the ordered dimensions rather than nominal dimensions from an unrelated stock size.
Nickel Alloy Pipe and Tube Weight
Pipe weight is determined by the cross-sectional area of the metal wall rather than the full outside cylindrical volume. For this reason, the outside diameter and wall thickness must both be known. The estimate does not account for fittings, end caps, weld reinforcement or other added components.
Nickel Alloy Wire Weight
Wire calculations use diameter and length. This is particularly useful for estimating wire coils, spring wire, welding wire and other continuous cylindrical products. For fine wire supplied in long coils, choosing meters as the length unit can make data entry more convenient.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is a nickel alloy weight calculator?
The calculator estimates theoretical weight using the dimensions entered and the nominal density assigned to the selected grade. Its accuracy depends on the quality of those inputs. Manufacturing tolerances, actual density, surface condition and dimensional deviations can cause actual measured weight to differ from the estimate.
Why does density differ between Monel and Inconel?
Monel and Inconel are different alloy families with different chemical compositions. Even grades within the same family can have different densities because their alloying elements and proportions are different. Always select the actual material grade instead of applying one generic nickel alloy density to every product.
Can I calculate the weight of several bars or plates?
Yes. Enter the dimensions of one piece and specify the number of identical pieces in the Quantity field. The calculator provides the estimated weight per piece, total weight in your selected unit, and equivalent totals in kilograms and pounds.
How do I calculate nickel alloy pipe weight?
Enter the outside diameter, wall thickness and length. The calculator subtracts the hollow inside area from the outside circular area to determine the volume of metal. The calculation assumes a uniform wall thickness and a straight cylindrical pipe or tube.
Can I use the calculated weight for shipping or invoicing?
Use the result as a preliminary material estimate, not as a substitute for an agreed commercial weight basis. Shipping chargeable weight may depend on packaging, dimensional weight and the carrier's rules. Final invoicing should follow the purchase contract, applicable tolerances and agreed weighing method.
Which unit should I use when entering dimensions?
Select the unit that matches every dimension you enter. You can choose millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches or feet. The calculator converts all entered dimensions internally before applying the selected alloy density.
