Nickel Alloy UNS Number & Grade Cross-Reference
Look up common nickel alloy grades by UNS number, commercial designation, Werkstoff number (W.Nr.) or alternative name. This cross-reference helps engineers, buyers and material sourcing teams identify commonly used designations for Monel, Inconel, Incoloy, Hastelloy, Nimonic and other nickel-based alloys.
Use the searchable table below to check a material designation, compare related identifiers and locate manufacturer technical references. Before purchasing, confirm the exact product specification, form, condition, dimensions and inspection requirements on your drawing or purchase order.
Search the Nickel Alloy Cross-Reference
Search by grade, UNS number, Werkstoff number or a common designation. You can also narrow the results by alloy family.

No Matching Reference Found
Try a shorter search term, remove a filter, or search by the UNS number printed on your material certificate.
The database is a practical reference for selected common grades, not a complete registry of all nickel alloys. Blank Werkstoff fields mean that a corresponding number has not been included in this reference table; they do not mean that no related national designation exists.
How to Use the Nickel Alloy Cross-Reference
Material documents often identify the same material using different conventions. A drawing may give a commercial grade, a material certificate may list a UNS number, and a European document may include a Werkstoff designation. This tool helps you connect commonly encountered identifiers before checking the controlling product specification.
Search by UNS Number
Enter the full UNS designation, such as N06625 or N10276, to find commonly associated alloy names. Preserve every character in the designation and compare it against the original drawing, purchase order or material certificate.
Search by Commercial Grade
Enter the grade name shown on your quotation or technical specification, such as Inconel 625, Monel 400 or Hastelloy C-276. The results include the recorded designation and related identifiers where available.
Search by Werkstoff Number
Use this field when a European material document lists a Werkstoff number, often written as W.Nr. or Werkstoff-Nr. Punctuation and spaces are normalized in the search, but the original designation should still be verified in the governing material documentation.
Verify the Controlling Specification
After finding a possible match, confirm the material standard for the required form, such as bar, plate, tube or wire. Check condition, dimensions, mechanical requirements and inspection documentation before ordering.
What Is a UNS Number?
The Unified Numbering System (UNS) provides a common identification framework for metals and alloys. It helps correlate material designations used by different organizations, producers and technical records.
A typical UNS designation combines a letter with five digits. Nickel alloy UNS numbers commonly begin with the letter N, followed by five digits. For example, Inconel 625 is commonly identified as UNS N06625, and Monel 400 as UNS N04400.
The key limitation is that a UNS number identifies a registered material designation; it does not, by itself, define the complete requirements for a specific commercial product. ASTM E527 explains that UNS numbers are not specifications and do not establish every requirement for form, condition or quality.
UNS Number vs. Product Specification
A UNS number answers, in effect, "Which material designation are we discussing?" A product specification answers a broader question: "What requirements must this particular product meet?" Those requirements can include composition, dimensions, mechanical properties, condition, test methods and acceptance criteria.

Identification examples are based on manufacturer technical literature. Confirm the current datasheet and the exact product specification when using these numbers for procurement.
How to Cross-Reference ASTM, ASME, AMS and EN Specifications
A correct grade-to-UNS match is only one part of specification review. Different product forms can be governed by different standards, even when the underlying alloy designation is the same. Standard numbers can also be revised, withdrawn or replaced.
Example: One Alloy, Different Product Standards
A round bar, plate and seamless tube made from the same alloy may be ordered to different product specifications. The chemical composition requirements may be similar, but dimensional tolerances, mechanical requirements, test methods and acceptance criteria may differ.
Do not assume that a standard for bar automatically applies to plate or tube. Verify the specification that governs the exact product being purchased.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a UNS number the same as an alloy grade?
Not exactly. A commercial grade name and a UNS number are different ways of identifying a material. A grade name can be a trademark or commonly used alloy designation, while the UNS number is part of the Unified Numbering System. The exact relationship should be checked against a reliable material reference.
Does the same UNS number mean two products are fully equivalent?
No. A UNS number is not a complete product specification. It does not independently establish product form, dimensions, heat treatment, mechanical properties, inspection methods or quality requirements. Review the applicable standard and procurement requirements before accepting a substitute.
What is a Werkstoff number?
A Werkstoff number, often written as W.Nr., is a material designation used in German and European material documentation. It can provide another way to locate a material reference, but should be checked against the precise grade and applicable EN or product specification.
Why might a search return more than one designation?
Some materials are known by a trade name, an alloy number, a generic designation or a national material identifier. Several related names may be used to discuss the same commonly identified alloy. Verify the exact producer designation and product specification before treating the references as equivalent.
Can I use this page to identify an unknown metal from a UNS number?
This database helps identify selected common nickel alloy grades. If the number is absent or the supplied designation is incomplete, consult the full UNS reference and the original material documentation. This page is not a complete registry of all metals and alloys.
Which information should I provide when requesting a quotation?
Provide the exact alloy grade, UNS number when applicable, governing material standard, product form, dimensions, quantity, material condition, inspection and certificate requirements, and delivery destination. Attach the drawing or purchase specification when available.
What should I do if two documents show different grade designations?
Do not select one designation based on name similarity alone. Compare the full material specifications, chemical and mechanical requirements, product condition and traceability documentation. Ask the material supplier or responsible engineer to resolve the discrepancy before placing the order.
